Written by Claudia Casper | #NoOneSucceedsAlone

There is always tension in our species between the desire for autonomy and the desire to belong and work together. This tension is playing out politically right now with Trump, Brexit, the EU, #metoo, political correctness, refugees, etc. I would argue, and envisioned in my most recent novel, The Mercy Journals, that the only way we can survive as a species, which is the success that matters the most, and deal with climate change in particular, is to achieve a level of global cooperation we have never seen before. No person is an island. Every novel is in conversation with the novels before it. No human life can be fully autonomous as we are born helpless. No writer succeeds without a reader. I look forward to bringing my autonomous self to the exciting sharing of words and ideas that is the Whistler Writer’s Festival.
