STAR COMEDIAN, VIDEO-GAME KING & BLUES MAN GET TO THE POINT!

For anyone who’s ever wondered what it would be like to do killer stand-up comedy, write a riveting adventure for a video game, or get down with their own blues lyrics, Writers Adventure Camp at The Point Artist-Run Centre has an eclectic set of upcoming workshops. Our inspiring & super fun hands-on sessions (June 9, 10 & 11) are open to beginners and aspiring aficionados alike:

The Power of Play, a video-game story-writing workshop with industry-leader Electronic Arts’ award-winning video-game creator Matt Turner, who says he’s been “building stories in the game industry for ten years and nerding-out on them for triple that.” Matt is Narrative Creative Director on a new, secret project at EA Canada in Vancouver. (Thursday, June 9: 2 to 5 pm)

Poetry Boot Camp with the award-winning and crazily prolific Elizabeth Bachinsky, author of five books, most recently The Hottest Summer in Recorded History. Her work has appeared widely in magazines, anthologies, and on film in Canada, the U.S., Europe, and China. Elizabeth is an instructor of poetry at Douglas College in New Westminster, BC. (Thurs, June 9: 2 to 5 pm)

We’re Only Joking, a humour-writing workshop with Charlie Demers of CBC’s The Debaters, and the hit one-man PUSH International Festival play Leftovers. Charlie helped create the popular annual East Van Christmas Panto, is the author of three humour books, and a regular on stand-up stages coast-to-coast (Friday, June 10: 2 to 5 pm

Blues Writing 101 with Vancouver’s Paul Pigat, who has one of the most restless musical imaginations ever crammed like canned-heat into one body. When not digging through his trunk of Boxcar Campfire songs, he fronts the jazz-bent Paul Pigat Trio, and moonlights as rockabilly hero Cousin Harley. This one is for musicians and non-musicians alike. (Sat. June 11: 2 to 5 pm)

Artisanal Self-Publishing with veteran magazine editor Shelley Youngblut. Currently director of Calgary’s Wordfest International Writers Festival, Shelley has taught publication design, branding and packaging and is a passionate advocate for transforming ideas into innovative objects. For writers, those interested in design & DIYers. (Sat. June 11 2 to 5pm)
