CAROLINE VAN HEMERT is an Alaskan author, biologist, and adventurer whose travels have taken her from the pack ice of the Arctic Ocean to the swamps of the Okavango Delta. Her recent book, The Sun Is a Compass: A 4,000-Mile Journey into the Alaskan Wilds, tells the story of her human-powered expedition—by rowboat, ski, foot, raft, and canoe—in search of adventure, birds, and her own love of science.
